Gifts in Kind, of Cultural Property
New Gifts in Kind
Each year the UofTLibraries receive hundreds of gifts in the form of rare books, maps, academic papers, manuscripts, etc from donors. These gifts have ensured the University Library is one of the finest in the world.
Donors making these gifts qualify for tax receipts for their fair market value which is determined by one or more independent professional appraisers. If the fair market value of all your charitable giving for a year exceeds 75% of your net income, you may carry the excess forward to five years, or back one year in the case of a gfit through your will. You may also hold your receipts and claim the value in one of these carry-forward years.
Donors may contact
- Andrew Davidson at 416.978.3118 to determine where conventional items are most appropriately placed
- Brock Silversides at 416.987.7119 to discuss placement of media collections
- Luba Frastacky at 416.946.3174 to discuss placement of rare materials
Gifts of Cultural Property
Some items of outstanding significance and national importance may be eligible under the federal Cultural Property Export and Import Act (CPELA) to be certified as cultural property. The fair market value of these gifts may be claimed up to 100% of the donor's net annual income in the year of the gift. The five carry-forward years apply as well.
At the University of Toronto, the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library and the University Archives are designated as category A institutions for the receipt of cultural property.
